BEHIND THE RECORDS.

THE ARTIST.

Apparat gives electronic sounds a human intimacy. A pattern can feel precisely programmed, while the voice or an organic sound adds a vulnerable edge to it.

The tension between an electronic pattern and a human voice is an important part of the appeal. A sound can recur for a long time, but suddenly feel warmer or more uncertain due to a small change. In Walls, this interplay takes on a tangible album form: songs, sound layers, and movements do not stand apart from one another, but also color their neighbors.

On vinyl, you can let the music slowly unfold. Choose a detail in the background and follow it until it disappears; meanwhile, the melody imperceptibly shifts to a different setting. The kinship with ambient lies in that attention to space. At the same time, the songs maintain enough rhythmic stability to carry the attention toward a new passage.

Listen to the layers behind the melody. Small sounds come forward and disappear again; the beat does not have to be the constant focal point. As a result, songs can remain both clearly structured and open in atmosphere.
