MUSIC EXPLAINED

WHAT IS DEEZER?

Deezer is a streaming service with French roots, a personalized music stream, and a focus on sound quality. But what exactly do Flow, SongCatcher, and HiFi do, and how can you tell if the service suits the way you listen?

A DIFFERENT WAY INTO MUSIC.

Deezer was founded in Paris in 2007. You can use the service to search for music, save albums, and create playlists. As with other streaming services, you get access to a catalog; you don’t automatically buy the individual recordings.

For many listeners, the biggest difference between services comes down to everyday use. Can you easily find an album? Does the app work with your speaker? Do recommendations actually help you find something new? These questions often matter more than a contest over who has the most tracks available.

FLOW: A PERSONAL MUSIC STREAM.

Flow is Deezer’s continuous, personalized mix. Your listening habits and preferences help shape its recommendations. With Flow Tuner, announced in February 2026, you can turn genres on or off, or add them. This lets you steer the music you’re offered more precisely.

This kind of feature is most useful when you treat it as a tool. Try a genre you’re less familiar with, then look up the entire album after a track catches your attention. Otherwise, discovery can easily become a series of brief encounters. An algorithm can open the door; it doesn’t have to plan your whole evening.

WHAT DOES SONGCATCHER DO?

SongCatcher helps identify music you hear. It’s useful when a song is playing somewhere and you don’t know its name. But identifying a track and understanding it are two different steps. Save your find and later check the artist, album, and version.

A live version, remix, or re-recording may exist alongside the original. So always check which version you’ve found. The same title doesn’t mean the recording is identical. That matters if you’re looking for a specific album or choosing a physical edition.

DEEZER HIFI HAS JUST CHANGED.

On October 14, 2026, Deezer announced an expansion to up to 24-bit/192 kHz FLAC for eligible tracks and qualifying paid subscriptions. Its previous HiFi offering focused on CD quality: 16-bit/44.1 kHz. Older comparisons may therefore be out of date.

The announcement itself notes that availability depends on market, track, and device. So check the actual quality indicator in your app. More bits or a higher sample rate won’t make a poor recording sound good. A well-made 16-bit/44.1 kHz master can sound excellent, too. The source and playback chain still matter most.

LISTENING OFFLINE AND SWITCHING SERVICES.

A paid subscription may offer offline listening within the app. Downloads like these remain tied to the service; they aren’t standalone music files you’ve bought. When comparing services, also consider your phone’s storage space and your usual data usage.

Deezer points users to Tune My Music to transfer a library. A transfer is a practical starting point, but check the results afterward. Versions can be mismatched, particularly with compilations, remasters, and tracks with the same name. It’s best to test with a small playlist before assuming everything transferred correctly.

HOW TO TEST WHETHER DEEZER IS RIGHT FOR YOU.

Choose five albums you know well and five you want to discover. Search for them manually, check the versions, then test playback on your own equipment. Try Flow only after that basic check. This way, you can compare both the catalog and how well the service helps you find more music.

When comparing sound, don’t change the volume and recording version at the same time. A louder or differently mastered track can make a stronger impression even when the difference has nothing to do with the format. Also read our comparison with Spotify and TIDAL.

RECOMMENDATIONS REFLECT YOUR LISTENING HABITS.

Flow isn’t the same as a fixed radio playlist that’s identical for every listener. Deezer describes it as a personalized stream that learns, among other things, from your listening, favorites, and followed artists. So the results also depend on what you show the service. A new account and a library you’ve been building for years aren’t an equal starting point for a comparison.

In February 2026, Deezer added more control over the system with Flow Tuner. That’s a meaningful development: rather than simply accepting a recommendation or skipping it, listeners can also influence the direction they want. At the same time, a recommendation feature is different from exploring an entire discography or an unfamiliar scene on your own. Discovery can start with convenience and continue with a deliberate detour.

SONGCATCHER IS A STARTING POINT, NOT THE FINAL DESTINATION.

Looking up an identified track is useful when you hear music somewhere that stays with you. The next step determines whether it remains a one-off find. Open the album the recording appears on, too. See whether the artist has made other versions, and note the difference between a studio version, live recording, and remix. That way, identification becomes a gateway to context.

This distinction can also prevent disappointment when transferring playlists. A transfer service may find a track with the same name without selecting the exact same recording. So check the music that matters most to you: extended versions, alternate performances, and albums that exist in multiple editions. A successful transfer of the titles doesn’t mean every recording has been verified.

A HIGHER MAXIMUM DOESN’T CHANGE EVERYTHING.

Deezer’s October 2026 HiFi announcement is a good reason to revisit older comparisons. It’s not a reason to assume that every album is available in hi-res. The catalog, market, subscription, and device all remain part of the equation. Check the specific recording and the setting you use to listen.

So, if you’re choosing between services, I’d start with five familiar albums and your own setup. Do the albums, search function, and offline playback work well for you? Can you find the right version without having to search again and again? Those questions make the difference between an impressive technical specification and a music service that suits you day to day.

FAQ.

Is Deezer the same as Spotify?

The basic idea is similar, but the interface, recommendations, integrations, and some features differ.

Does Deezer only offer CD quality?

That description is out of date: on October 14, 2026, Deezer announced HiFi up to 24-bit/192 kHz for eligible tracks, devices, and subscriptions.

Do I get music files with a subscription?

No. Listening offline within the app is different from buying a standalone file.

Do transferred playlists always match exactly?

Check the versions. Tracks with the same title, remasters, and compilations can lead to an incorrect match.
