ARTIST STORY
SPINVIS.
A street, a voice on a tape, a memory without a clear ending. Spinvis makes music in which small things can linger for a long time.

Open in Spotify ↗A WORLD BETWEEN THE LINES
A Spinvis song does not have to explain everything. A name or a stray sentence can be enough to open a room that you furnish yourself. Erik de Jong uses the Dutch language as material: meaning, sound and rhythm are all free to do their work at once.
THE WORLD IN FRAGMENTS.
The self-titled 2002 debut shows how home recordings can form a musical world of their own. Fragments of voices appear as if someone has briefly switched on a radio. A melody emerges among sounds you would not immediately identify as instruments. This collage asks for your attention without leading you by the hand.
What feels unfinished is mainly what the songs leave open. Who is speaking here? Is this a memory or an invented scene? A detail can be very concrete even when its context is missing. As a result, you may hear the same song differently later: the words remain, but your own experience shifts.
A VOICE THAT DOESN’T OVERSHADOW THE STORY.
The almost-spoken delivery brings the music close. The voice does not need to amplify every emotion; a slight hesitation can say more than a long vocal flourish. Samples and instruments act as the voice’s surroundings. Sometimes they move with it; at other times, they seem to interrupt its thoughts.
That makes listening about more than simply following the lyrics. Notice what happens before a line begins and after it ends. A background sound can change the meaning without using a single word itself.
START WITH AN ALBUM.
The best way in is to listen to a whole record. Let the individual scenes follow one another and notice which images keep returning. In the album story about the debut, you can read more about the home recordings and the cassette where it all began.
On an LP, flipping it over divides that flow into two listening sessions. That doesn’t make vinyl a better explanation of Spinvis, but it can help keep your attention on the sequence. See the debut on vinyl for details of the catalog release.
AFTER THE DEBUT: A WORLD THAT KEEPS CHANGING.
The first record is a starting point, but not a summary of everything Spinvis went on to make. Dagen van gras, dagen van stro followed in 2005. Tot ziens, Justine Keller appeared in 2011, and Trein Vuur Dageraad in 2017. 7.6.9.6. added another album in 2020. The titles alone suggest different ways of conjuring a world: a landscape, a farewell, three scattered images or a sequence of numbers. Their meaning is not immediately fixed.
This is also a useful way to approach his music. With a title like Tot ziens, Justine Keller, someone appears in your imagination before you know anything about them. Who is saying goodbye, and how final is that farewell? The music does not need to answer those questions one by one. The feeling of a situation can be clear even when some of the events remain out of sight. A listener can bring something of themselves to it without every song becoming a blank screen.
FROM A PHONE TO A WHOLE RECORD.
Erik de Jong has described how Trein Vuur Dageraad began with a short recording on an iPhone: a sung melody with freshly written lines. The record grew from there. That concrete starting point fits his way of working. A small recording is not just a memory aid to be discarded once the song is composed; it can hold something that gets lost in a polished repetition.
An initial sketch might have a timing you never consciously designed. A word arrives just a little too early, a melody takes an unexpected turn, or a breath interrupts a thought. Preserving such a moment also keeps the process of searching audible. That does not mean the result has to sound rough. The form is shaped precisely by what you leave in and what you change. With Spinvis, it is interesting to listen at that boundary: when does something sound as if it is taking shape on the spot, and when can you hear how carefully its surroundings have been built?
LANGUAGE THAT ALSO BECOMES MUSIC.
Dutch words have their own weight. Consonants can almost hold a rhythm back; long vowels give a melody room to breathe. In Spinvis’s delivery, these qualities are inseparable from the meaning of the lyrics. An everyday word can stand out because it falls in an unexpected place in the beat. Conversely, an important thought can be spoken almost casually.
That is why it pays not to treat every line as a message straight away. First, listen to the pattern: where does the voice linger, which words return, and where does an instrument have the last word? Then you can return to the lyrics. The same sentence may evoke something different once you have heard the movement it is part of. The song tells its story not only through words, but also through the space that opens up around them.
TWO WAYS INTO THE SAME BODY OF WORK.
The self-titled first record is a good starting point if you want to hear the collage. If you are more curious about how that world developed later, you can start with the title of a subsequent album. Comparing works is more useful than searching for one definitive best record. What sounds more familiar, what opens up, and which way of telling a story do you recognize at once? Let an album establish its own connections before pulling out individual favourites. That way, even on an LP, your attention stays on the whole, with room for the songs whose meaning only becomes clear after a few listens.
