Open in Spotify ↗You don't need to know the schoolyard from Reünie yourself to understand why Snelle looks back on it. Everyone keeps a place where they once felt too small. Lars Bos uses such memories as a starting point for songs that have sounded bigger and bigger: first close to the microphone, later with room for a whole venue. The scale changes. The desire to be understood remains.
A VOICE FROM GORSSEL.
Lars Bos was born on 3 October 1995 and grew up in Gorssel, in the area around Deventer. Under the name Snelle, he develops a way of rapping in which intelligibility does a lot of work. The words don't need to come from a character. You hear a storyteller who wants to explain something, sometimes to himself as well. That personal perspective becomes the connection between his early rap and the pop songs that later reach a much larger audience.
In the first releases, the sentence structure is often still that of a rapper: lines that react to each other, thoughts that carry over the beat, emphasis on the last words. At the same time, he is already looking for the melody. A chorus can be simpler than the verse, as long as it holds the emotion. That combination makes the transition to radio and larger stages understandable. The pop side does not appear suddenly; it gradually gets more space.
REÜNIE MAKES IT PERSONAL.
After the EP Lieve jongens from 2018 comes Beetje bij beetje in early 2019. On that release is Scars, an important song in his breakthrough. In March, the extended version Beetje bij beetje (Nog een beetje) is released. This early phase lets you hear how useful a personal history can be when someone makes a song out of it. Recognition arises here from concrete experiences, without the listener having to have experienced exactly the same thing.
Later in 2019, Reünie reaches the first place in the Dutch Top 40. The song looks back on exclusion and the distance between who you used to be and who others now see in you. The interesting thing is the duality: success did not automatically erase that old relationship. Behind the satisfaction, the need for recognition remains audible. Because of this, the song also works outside the story of a famous artist who encounters his old environment again.
Listen to the transition from the narrative verse to the chorus. The details become more general, the rhythm becomes easier to follow together. That is a recurring movement in Snelle. First he draws a situation, then he gives the listener a line or melodic line to step into. The song tells something personal and at the same time offers space for people to bring their own version of that memory.
TWENTY-FOUR: THE RAP OPENS UP.
On Vierentwintig, released in 2019, that approach gets a broader framework. The album brings the rap side together with the kind of melodic directness that will characterize his most famous work. Snelle sometimes sounds as if he is continuing a conversation and sometimes as if he already hears a venue singing the chorus back. Those two attitudes are close together. The storyteller wants to get his story out, but also wants to keep contact.
There is a strength and a tension in that. The bigger a chorus becomes, the fewer details it can carry. A line must land quickly. In his most convincing moments, Snelle therefore saves the details for the verse: a memory, an uncomfortable gesture, a look back that does not completely reassure. The chorus then does not need to explain the whole story again. It mainly carries the feeling that remains of it.
ONE THING YOU DIDN’T KNOW.
A love song with road safety as the occasion.
Smoorverliefd was created in collaboration with Interpolis for a campaign against phone use on bicycles. The romantic distraction in the story therefore has a very concrete occasion. That also makes the song interesting as a song: an everyday habit provides the tension, while the melody holds the feeling of that first love.
The campaign explains the context, but the song must stand on its own feet as a pop song. It shows how Snelle can bring a subject close by choosing one relatable situation.
LARS: COLLABORATION AS CONVERSATION.
In 2021, Lars is released. The title alone puts the emphasis on the person behind the artist name. The record comes in a period in which collaborations broaden their reach. Blijven slapen with Maan gives two voices a shared space. A duet can make something that a solo song can do more difficult: the longing becomes audible as a relationship between people. The other person does not need to be described in detail, because they sing back.
That interaction fits a catalog in which contacts are often the subject. With Suzan & Freek he makes De overkant, with Ronnie Flex In de schuur and with Davina Michelle 17 miljoen mensen. The collaborations bring different musical environments together. Snelle does not have to completely change his way of telling for that. His voice remains quite direct and recognizable, even when the production or the second voice adds a different color.
Papa heeft weer wat gelezen with Thomas Acda opens another door. There, the conversation between generations gets a place. The combination of an experienced songwriter and an artist from Dutch rap lets you hear how small the distance between those worlds sometimes is. Both can build on timing, an ordinary spoken sentence and the moment when a detail starts to mean something bigger. The difference then lies mainly in the musical packaging.
A BAND BEHIND THE STORY.
As his audience grows, the live environment also shifts. Snelle plays with his Lieve Jongens Band and makes room for concerts and theater tours. A band changes the way this repertoire can breathe. A transition can last longer, a chorus can wait for the reaction of the venue and a rhythmic accent gets a visible source on stage. The songs remain recognizable, while their performance gets more room to move.
In 2023, he gives two Thuis bij Snelle concerts in De Adelaarshorst in Deventer. That stadium makes the relationship with his environment tangible. An artist who looks back a lot at his youth brings his big show literally to the region with which his story is connected. The feeling of home is both the subject and the location there. At the same time, such a large stage makes a practical demand: even the smallest observation must remain understandable from a distance.
The theater offers the other side of that development. There, the explanation between the songs can get more weight and the attention can stay on a text longer. That alternation fits Snelle: he writes music that provokes singing along, but also needs the conversation around it. A rap line, a pop chorus and a spoken memory thus become different ways to address the same listener.
EIGHTY-TWO AND INNER MIRROR.
Achtentwintig originally appears in 2023; the deluxe edition follows in 2024. The age in the title aligns with Vierentwintig, but also makes elapsed time visible. With songs like Hoodiedate, Terugweg and September with Miss Montreal, the record remains close to relationships and everyday situations. Famous voices come along, while Snelle's own perspective holds the album together. The collaboration becomes a form, not the only subject.
In 2026 follows Binnenspiegel, originally released on May 29. The title fits a writer who looks back while life continues. On the record are among others Groot maar klein, Laat het licht aan and Oost west thuis best. The collaboration with Zoë Livay on Ik zing also gets a place there. The gaze turns back to memories, relationships and the question of what remains of familiar feelings when you get older.
That looking back is by now a line through his work. In Reünie, the past gets the form of a confrontation. Later, more kinds of looking back come along: at family, at a relationship, at an environment that keeps changing. Success does not automatically make his subjects bigger. Often, ordinary moments become the measure instead. A successful Snelle song can have a big production and yet start with something that could also have been in your agenda.
The language also helps with that. His lyrics do not need to sound elevated to take a feeling seriously. A proverb, an everyday title or a sentence that looks like a text message can be the start of a chorus. The risk is that familiar language easily becomes general. The best passages therefore give it a situation: who speaks, to whom, and what stands between them at that moment?
Who knows mainly the loose hits can better hear on an album how that approach repeats and shifts. A collaboration interrupts the perspective, a calmer song gives the voice more room, a solid rhythm pulls the story forward again. It results in a catalog in which rap and Dutch pop continuously stay in conversation with each other. One time the word steers, the other time the melody carries the heaviest load.
WHERE DO YOU START LISTENING?
Put Scars, Reünie and Blijven slapen one after another. You hear the distance between personal rap, a broadly carried chorus and a duet in which the voices together carry the story. Then go to Papa heeft weer wat gelezen and a song from Binnenspiegel. Pay attention especially to what the text makes concrete first, and to the point where the melody takes over the explanation. There you recognize his handwriting.

FINAL WORD.
A big chorus starts close by.
Snelle's development goes from a personal rap to songs that effortlessly reach a venue. The connection is in his gaze on ordinary people and moments. He does not need to make a memory exceptional to find music in it. Sometimes a schoolyard, a conversation with your father or the voice of someone next to you is already enough. When the melody then opens up, the listener may bring their own story along.
