NICK CAVE.

From the intensity of The Birthday Party to the open arms of Wild God, Nick Cave has continued to ask the same big questions while his music has constantly changed form.

A VOICE THAT CHANGES THE ROOM.

Nick Cave can sound menacing without raising his voice. A piano note, a few words, and someone is in the room demanding something from you. His music moves between violence, love, faith, and doubt. What changes is the distance from which he allows those subjects to approach him.

He was born in 1957 in Warracknabeal, in the Australian state of Victoria. During his school years, the seeds of The Boys Next Door were sown. That group evolved into The Birthday Party, a band in which punk, blues, and chaos collided. Guitar parts sounded frayed, rhythms seemed to stumble, and Cave was right in the middle of it. On Prayers on Fire and Junkyard, you can hear a song almost burst at the seams.

MORE SPACE FOR THE STORY.

After The Birthday Party, The Bad Seeds were formed. Musicians such as Mick Harvey, Blixa Bargeld, and Barry Adamson came together around Cave. From Her to Eternity in 1984 opened the door to a more expansive musical world. The menace remained, but silence, repetition, and storytelling also took their place. Blues and old ballads became material with which the band could build something new.

Cave often sings as if inhabiting a character. On The Mercy Seat, the music relentlessly continues while the narrator tries to control his situation. On Let Love In, attraction is as oppressive as danger. Red Right Hand keeps much out of view: a dark pulse, small sounds, and a figure that grows larger because you cannot see him completely. The suggestion does as much as the lyrics.

A MURDER BALLAD IN THE HIT PARADE.

Murder Ballads in 1996 explored an old tradition full of perpetrators and victims. The duet Where the Wild Roses Grow with Kylie Minogue had already brought that world to a different audience in 1995. The combination works through the difference between their voices: her clarity against his low, controlled delivery. A beautiful melody does not make the story innocent.

Then the scale changed. The Boatman’s Call in 1997 revolves around piano, open space, and words that receive less protection from a role or set. Where earlier records staged entire scenes, Cave seems to sit closer to you here. The band plays restrained enough to give weight to a small change in his voice.

WARREN ELLIS AND THE SPACE BETWEEN THE NOTES.

With Warren Ellis, Cave found an increasingly important musical conversation partner. Together, they could also let music emerge from texture: a sustained sound, a loop, something that did not yet seem like a finished song. Push the Sky Away, Skeleton Tree, and Ghosteen ask you to listen differently than to a record full of tight choruses. Voices and instruments sometimes drift past each other before they find each other.

Loss took a major place in Cave's later work, but that music cannot be reduced to an explanation of his private life. There is also a sense of connection, and the desire to make contact again after grief. With Wild God in 2024, the band opens the space even further. Choirs, movement, and exuberance give the songs something collective. The questions do not disappear; the music lets more people search for an answer together.

THE OTHER ROUTES.

Alongside The Bad Seeds, Grinderman provided a place for dirty guitars, physical humor, and direct energy. With Ellis, Cave also made film music and the independent song album Carnage in 2021. Those side paths explain why his oeuvre remains vibrant. He can break a form when it threatens to become too familiar, and later return to a piano or a simple melody with different ears.

ONE THING YOU DIDN’T KNOW.

In The Red Hand Files, Cave wrote that the eight songs of Carnage came together in about two and a half days. That was not the full recording period, but the moment when the album found its form. After a long forced standstill, momentum suddenly arose. It fits the collaboration with Ellis: listening a lot, allowing something in, and recognizing when an accidental sound wants to become a song.
