ARTIST STORY

BUSH.

Bush can make a chorus hit like a door flying open. But put on Glycerine and you hear how little it sometimes takes. A guitar, a voice, and enough space to feel the tension. Between those extremes, the London band built a distinctive sound.

LONDON, LOOKING OUTWARD.

The band formed in 1992 around singer and guitarist Gavin Rossdale and guitarist Nigel Pulsford. With bassist Dave Parsons and drummer Robin Goodridge, the classic lineup took shape. They found their first major audience in the United States, where 1994’s Sixteen Stone became a breakthrough.

The music fit the era’s appetite for guitar, but its success also hinged on melody. Everything Zen and Machinehead have a powerful drive. Above that, Rossdale’s voice sounds raspy and elastic, as if a sentence isn’t quite ready to come to a close. It makes the songs instantly recognizable.

THE SPACE BETWEEN THE CHORDS.

Comedown shows how important the lower end of a Bush song can be. The bass line moves patiently while the rest of the band builds tension. When the chorus opens up, it feels like a well-earned release. The guitars don’t need to be at full blast all the time.

Glycerine, by contrast, strips things back. The distorted chords linger, and the vocals carry almost the entire story. The song doesn’t let itself be rushed by a busy drumbeat. That gives the voice’s little hesitations and rough edges more weight. It’s a good first stop for anyone who mainly remembers Bush as loud.

On vinyl, that contrast across Sixteen Stone really stands out. A heavy song changes how you experience the quiet that follows. The record has volume, but it also has room to breathe. Listen to the shift from a full band to an almost unguarded voice.

A BAND THAT KEEPS SHIFTING.

For 1996’s Razorblade Suitcase, Bush worked with Steve Albini. The recording puts more emphasis on the tangible sound of instruments in a room. Swallowed has a melody that lingers, while the guitars scrape and pull. The tension is less polished than it might have been on a major commercial follow-up.

1999’s The Science of Things adds electronics. On The Chemicals Between Us, they give the guitars a different kind of movement. 2001’s Golden State turns back toward the rock band sound. The landscape changes, while Rossdale’s vocals remain a familiar touchstone.

After a hiatus, Bush returned in 2010; The Sea of Memories followed in 2011. Their later run has a heavier sound and more modern production. The Kingdom and The Art of Survival show just how much weight the band can still draw from a riff. Their tenth studio album, I Beat Loneliness, came out in 2025.

The current lineup consists of Rossdale, guitarist Chris Traynor, bassist Corey Britz, and drummer Nik Hughes. The lineup is different from the one on the debut. Still, the heart of the music remains unmistakable: a heavy sound with a melody working its way through it.

ONE THING YOU DIDN’T KNOW.

In Canada, early records were released under the name Bush X because another band called Bush already existed there. So if you come across a copy in a record bin, you haven’t found a different version or a mysterious side project.

FAQ

Where is the band Bush from?

Bush formed in London in 1992 around singer and guitarist Gavin Rossdale and guitarist Nigel Pulsford. Bassist Dave Parsons and drummer Robin Goodridge completed the classic early lineup.

Why is Bush often associated with grunge?

The heavy guitars, dynamic shifts, and husky vocals fit the alternative rock sound that rose to prominence in the United States in the early 1990s. Bush, however, came from London and developed its own melodic take on post-grunge and modern rock.

Which album was Bush’s breakthrough?

1994’s Sixteen Stone was the band’s international breakthrough album. Singles such as Everything Zen, Glycerine, Comedown, and Machinehead quickly made the band a major act, especially in North America.

What is Bush’s Glycerine about?

Glycerine is a stripped-down love song about attraction, confusion, and a relationship that’s hard to hold on to. The recording relies mainly on Rossdale’s voice and distorted guitar, with strings that gradually build the tension.

Why is the second album called Razorblade Suitcase?

The title Razorblade Suitcase evokes luggage that is both personal and dangerous. The 1996 album sounds rougher than the debut and was produced by Steve Albini; the single Swallowed received a Grammy nomination.

Who is in Bush today?

Gavin Rossdale remains the band’s familiar face and principal songwriter. The current lineup also includes guitarist Chris Traynor, bassist Corey Britz, and drummer Nik Hughes, while the early albums were made with a different rhythm section.

Which Bush albums are essential on vinyl?

Sixteen Stone is the obvious first choice thanks to its run of well-known singles. Razorblade Suitcase offers a darker, more direct follow-up; later records such as The Art of Survival have also been released on vinyl.

There’s also a personal connection with No Doubt: Bush singer Gavin Rossdale and Gwen Stefani, No Doubt’s lead singer, were in a relationship and married from 2002 to 2016. Their bands offer different paths through the guitar pop of the 1990s.

THE FINAL WORD.

LET THE GUITAR RING OUT.

Start with Glycerine, then play Comedown. You hear the same band from two angles: intimate and open, then expansive and immersive. Bush is at its best when the melody remains palpable beneath the weight of the guitars. That’s exactly what makes it rewarding to listen again.
