BENTE.

She was in the spotlight from a young age. It was only years later that Bente discovered how powerful it could be to sing in her own language without protection.

Bente was eleven when the Netherlands first heard her. That might sound like a head start, but becoming famous early is different from knowing who you are early. Her real development only began when she left behind the expectations surrounding the child prodigy, started writing in Dutch, and no longer saw vulnerability as something that needed to be polished out of a pop song. Two albums later, she doesn't sound like someone still finding her place, but like an artist who has turned her doubt into direction. At SJELF, you can find Dwars on vinyl.

TOO YOUNG TO WAIT

Bente Fokkens was born in Amsterdam on 29 September 2000 and grew up in Muiden. Music came early. She wrote songs, accompanied herself on guitar, and appeared on the first season of The Voice Kids at age eleven, where she sang Lost by Anouk. The performance gave her a face before a large audience, but what happened next was more important: she kept writing and performing.

By the age of twelve, she had already been named a 3FM Serious Talent. She performed on Into The Great Wide Open with Tim Knol and appeared on De Wereld Draait Door. At the same time, she developed a second career as an actress. That visibility made her exceptionally experienced for her age, but also created a strange tension. Everyone could see she had talent. The question was what story she wanted to tell with it.

FINDING HER OWN LANGUAGE

Her first releases were in English. That was expected of a young singer-songwriter: the examples on the radio and television were usually in English, and in another language, you can sometimes keep personal thoughts just a little further away from yourself. But when Bente joined Top Notch, the distance from her music changed.

In Dutch, she could no longer hide behind sound or style. Every sentence came closer. On the 2020 EP Liefste, Ken Je Mij and its 2021 successor Als Je Gaat, it became clear where her strength lay: direct pop songs in which uncertainty, love, and self-examination are not resolved, but allowed to exist out loud. The collaboration with Maan on Nee Is Nee also brought her to a larger audience.

IF I COULD DANCE WITH THE WIND

Her debut album Als Ik Met De Wind Kon Dansen was released in 2022. The title captures the album well. Bente tries to find control, but knows that feelings cannot be steered. The production is spacious and melodic, while the lyrics remain close to her skin. She sings about panic, longing, and the need to truly be seen by someone else.

On the title track, a panic attack turns into movement. Not because fear can simply be danced away, but because music sometimes reaches the body before a rational answer. Maak Me Wakker and Als Geen Ander, together with MEAU, showed how naturally Bente could link personal confessions to big choruses. The album was not the end point of her young career. It was the first album on which that long lead-up began to sound like one story.

WHEN VULNERABILITY MOVES

Vulnerability is often confused with softness in pop music. For Bente, it is precisely a form of movement. Her songs can start intimately and then break open into rhythm, sing-along, or a melody that becomes bigger than the room in which it seems to have been written. That contrast prevents her music from being heard only as a diary.

She does not write to present all the answers. She writes from the moment when a feeling does not yet have a neat form. Because of this, listeners recognize not only the subject, but also the confusion surrounding it. Bente makes room for contradiction: wanting to be strong and yet needing reassurance, wanting to live freely and being afraid of losing something.

“Drift represents energy and longing to me.”
— BENTE, 2024

DRIFT

With drift in 2024, that tension became sharper. The second album is about growing up without completely letting go of the carefree child within. The title refers at the same time to drive, longing, and a force that cannot always be neatly controlled. Bente sounded freer, more physical, and less interested in perfection.

Songs like Jan van Galenstraat, Zonder Handen Rijden, and Papa Zegt Dat Het Goed Komt place big emotions in recognizable images. Not everything needs to be symbolically inflated; a street name, a bike ride, or a sentence from a parent can be enough to evoke an entire life. Guest contributions from Roxeanne Hazes, Mathieu Terryn, and others broadened the album without pushing away its personal core.

drift also changed how Bente was seen. Her first sold-out show at Paradiso, performances on larger stages, two 3FM Awards, and an Edison nomination made it clear that she was no longer just a promising talent. In 2026, she won her first Edison in the Dutch-language category. After a childhood in which her talent was constantly announced, the recognition was finally connected to the work that felt entirely like herself.

A WIDER AUDIENCE

Her participation in Beste Zangers brought another audience close again in 2025. The program revolved around interpretation, but above all showed what her own work had already proven: Bente can make a song personal without singing it smaller. She does not look for vocal power to impress; she uses her voice to make a text land credibly.

That is perhaps the most striking line in her career. She started on television, but her story is not about a talent show. She acted, released early English-language music, switched to Dutch, and only then built a catalog that truly felt like one world. Every phase provided experience, but only when she found her language did she also find her form.

THE FINAL WORD

Growing up in public only mattered once she learned to sound like herself.

Bente already had a career before most artists dare to release their first song. Yet her real story is not about how early she started, but about how consciously she started again. By writing in Dutch, she let every safe distance disappear. What remained was a voice that does not want to seem perfect, but dares to be just enough to reach others in their own doubt.
